Inflationary Pressures…Not With Influence Direct
As we all continue to feel the pressure of rising fuel prices and the impact on our purchasing power on everything from milk to rubber bands, I am intrigued with the savvy marketing tactics organizations are implementing to keep margins from falling down. As I sat at the kitchen table eating breakfast with my wife, I noticed the box of Raisin Bran I just finished had a heavier weight than the box we purchased from the grocery store last week. After a little more investigation, I realized I am now paying the same amount for my Raisin Bran in return for a smaller amount of cereal in the same size box! It seems most organizations are faced with a dilemma: Do we raise prices for the same size product or do we reduce the size of our product and keep the same price? As the owner of a small business, I know many of you out there are feeling the same pinch and I must say I do not like the way this pinch feels. It is with in mind that I have decided to do the opposite and lower our post card printing and mailing program prices. As a matter of fact, we have dropped our prices to a level that is significantly lower than the industry average. Early in my management career, I received a wonderful piece of advice from my mentor, Chris Gibson. Chris reminded me: “Anyone can be a great leader when times are good. It is when times are bad that your measure as a leader will be seen”. The same saying applies to my company and how we want to treat our current and future clients. Anyone can offer low prices when times are good and our supplier prices are low. It is when times are tough and our supplier prices are high that our loyalty to our customers will show.
